I got it!
I literally "caught" my first baby today. . .seriously. One second my resident is telling our patient no to push because she still has some cervix left - then the next second he grabs his gown & gloves. . .so I follow suit. He gives me a shove to where I'm right there - center stage - but I'm thinking. . .okay, I can do this, she still has some cervix left, my intern reviews my "hand position" with me - which I think is nice seeing as how we have like 30 mintues to stand here and play. . .I was TOTALLY WRONG. The very next contraction the lady had literally shot that baby out. . .I know that Dr. Petty told me "deliver anterior sholder" - I have no idea what I did, but all in a sudden, there was a slimy newborn in my arms. (The dad didn't even know that we had delivered until I held the baby up.) The main thought going through my head was "don't drop the baby. . .don't drop the baby."
The baby wasn't dropped. . .I came back to my senses and handed the baby off & got cord blood. After a little clean-up work, I walked outside with my resident & a nurse came up to us and asked "so was it a boy or a girl?" I honestly had no idea - all I know is that I didn't drop that baby. . .its only my first time - maybe I'll pay attention to the sex of the baby next time.
