Get Out - NOW!!!

Ok - I'll admit it. . .I'm a little naive - which doesn't really help me with my psychiatric patients. I tend to believe everything they say - I want to believe everything they say. . .cause deep down - I am a people pleaser. I want to make people happy - including my psych patients.

So fastforward to today - I had to go see a patient that was in the hospital...I should of had a clue when there were 4 officers standing outside of the door - but when I went in there and thought that I had established this excellent repore with the guy. I had an "amazing calming effect" on him - so much so that the security was able to leave. (they were just there until Psych was able to assess him). I got his story (and yes, believed every word). After collecting what we call "collaborative data" - it turns out that the dude lied to me. My resident, the nurse, & I went in to inform him that based on the new information we had, we were going to have to keep him. The majority of the conversation was calm - then suddenly things changed - our patient became VERY violent VERY quickly - at this moment my resident looked into my eyes and very calmly said "get out. . .NOW!!!" The 3 of us cleared the door just in time.

To say I had an interesting morning is an understatement - however, the one good thing I got out of this morning was the nurses reaction - she was right there with us (and much further away from the door than I was). . .but the first words out of her mouth once our adrenalin stopped being in complete control was "poor thing." (speaking about our patient). I was touched by her unwavering sense of care for her patient - I can't say the same for myself - but thats okay. . .at least I know one thing that I don't want to do for the rest of my life.

No snow day for you doc

I was on call yesterday - the same day that we were under a "heavy snow warning." I asked my resident "what happens if on Saturday morning, we have 2 feet of snow & the roads are tretrious?" She looked at me like I was dumb and said, "that means be very careful as you're driving up here." I had to work yesterday seeing all of our patients. They didn't care that I risked my life & my car to come see them. . .oh well. My roommate asked me if I was going to live somewhere where it didn't snow since "doctors don't get snow days."
Note that our Christmas lights are still on our house. . .so we have isicles on our isicle lights.

Snow Day

I left the ER (on Psychiatry business) at 5pm on Friday afternoon and found that my windshield was frozen over. Yesterday we woke up to find a total whiteout of the front yard & street. Since Christmas break just ended - and I, like others waited until the last possible second to come back - so our cuppards are bare. We HAD to go to Wal-Mart. I gave the ice ample time to melt (so I thought) - but after slidding completely through the first stop sign, I just made a small trip around the block and came back home.

This morning we've had another ice storm - this one caused church to be cancelled. Jezabell is refusing to go outside (she says "are you crazy? its cold out there! the ground is covered with ice! I think you send me outside just so you can watch me slip on the ice and do my little slippery dance.") I guess we'll just hang out here and study and catch up on our TIVO.

Sittin' at Home. . .waitin' on a phone call

Psychaitry. . .its my first day, and I'm on call. . .home call - but still on-call. I called the resident and after I gave him my pager number & cell phone - then he asks me a strange question "so, do you want me to call you. . .I was stunned - this is day one - so without thinking I said "sure." Oh goodness. . .now I have to cart my pager & phone around and be ready to jump - hooray.

Christmas Break

Two Weeks. . .it was awesome. My entire family was home for Christmas. . .five people, two dogs, three bedrooms. . .goodtimes. It was a smaller Christmas giftwise. . .Landon gave me the exact same movie that he gave me last year (mostly because as soon I got it last year -he borrowed it, moved to Dallas & never returned the video.)

My good friend Adelina got married - which was a perfect chance to catch-up with my med school peeps that I refer to as "El Paso" and "Amarillo". This is 5 of the 6 of us outside of IHOP on the morning after the wedding. . .I'll have to post to a picture of Lina when I get one - she was georgous!
